Transformers Xbox 360 Review
Activision's Spiderman series gave hope for movie-based videogames. When they announced that they would be releasing a game based off of the new Transformers movie, we all had high hopes. Unfortunately, Transformers: The Game suffers from the same problems we see in many movie-based videogames. These are mostly license restrictions and time restraints.
Transformers: The Game feels like they tried to copy from some of the Spiderman Movie games. The free-roaming part of the game feels thrown in there and is not a big part of the game like Spiderman. The game does contain optional missions, but there are not that many of them. There are also a couple of in-game accomplishments, not just achievements, like in Spiderman. One of the best things that Transformers has going for it is being able to play as both Autobots and Decepticons.
Besides having a useless free-roaming mode, the missions also fail to entertain. Most of the missions are basic and feel like you're playing an older system. It's especially disappointing to find that your weapons as an Autobot are not that helpful. Using melee attacks are usually the best attack method. And as an Autobot, you cannot cause too much damage at once or risk failing the mission. Playing as a Decepticon, you are encourage to cause destruction. In fact, Decepticons are the more enjoyable bots to play as. It's too bad that the missions are still basic and linear.
One of the better things about the game is that the Transformers themselves look pretty good. The environment and the rest of the graphics don't looks as good but are still decent. There is a good amount of environment destruction but I'd like to see some Transformer destruction. The cut-scenes aren't anything special besides the opening CGI.
The main problem with Transformers is that the missions are outdated and too linear to make this a next-gen title. Transformers makes a good game to rent for fans of the movie, however, purchasing the game is not recommended. I thought that this had a good chance of at least being a pretty good title, but it ended in disappointment.
SCORE: 4.9/10
