Major Starfield Patch Arrives On Xbox Ahead Of This Week's Launch

One of the channels i follow said they played 15 hours and seen no bugs at the 25 hour mark 2 small bugs that Bethesda will likely have fixed in a day one patch and by far the least buggy Bethesda game they ever seen. But couldn’t say much more at this time. If true that is a huge win and something I’ve spoken about on here before. The game was delayed to iron out bugs and add polish. This should get interesting if true, cause all the haters were so ready to write their buggy mess articles week 1 of release.

I cannot imagine how long this game will take to complete downloading.. Such a large game and than that patch too..
Thank goodness I’m refraining from buying anymore xbox or playstation games haha.

@Mauzuri it will be a long time before we know. But hopefully very soon SF will be our first look. Could be very good news i agree.

Another patch before launch won't be an issue for me. Thankfully my broadband speed is lightning fast. I can obviously understand why it would be frustrating for those with crappy internet though.

@Mauzuri I think having the resources at Microsoft have probably helped them in regard to testing and identifying the bugs.

I just wish Bethesda changed its art direction / style .. I’ll still play it and I hope I enjoy every minute but I would love to see the studio switch it up on a future installment with a game that doesn’t have a typical rpg look

I haven't been as excited for the launch of a game since I was a teenager waiting for The Wind Waker or San Andreas.

I find myself anxiously refreshing websites and YouTube, hoping for the tiniest bit of information on the game. I've heard the hate, but whether certain things are true or not, I don't care, I just want to play what Bethesda has decided to create for us!

I'm so excited for this I'll be up all night playing it at release I've not done that in years cannot wait.

With my 1 GBPS internet connection it took 22 mins to download the initial 100 gb. And it will take about 2 to 3 mins to download this update.

The best news we could get about Elder Scrolls VI is that they have developed a entirely fresh engine that has no connections to the Creation Engine or Gamebryo

Whats this 'boundary reached' screenshot of the game, thats suggests you can't actually traverse a whole planet ,its set out in chunks of explorable space, where you have to select different parts of the map,if this is true its a huge disappointment to me,and waned my enthusiasm considerably.

@tallythwack That's where most of the hate is coming from but Todd mentioned in the Direct that you choose where to land and then can explore the area around it. The planets are similar to multiple large maps stitched together.

People didn't listen correctly and then made up their own expectations, but you can't reasonably expect 1000 planets that are fully explorable and have packed environments. No Mans Sky had big planets to explore but there was barely anything in them.

Personally, I'm happy to have smaller areas that I can fully explore and then land somewhere else to explore more. It'll help me with my FOMO disease of "Did I go this way? What's over there? Wasn't I in the middle of a quest 25 hours ago?"

Certainly hope reviews are based post-patch and not pre-patch. State of Decay 2 took a battering for issues the general public never witnessed due to opinions being based on pre-patch content.

@CrimsonRidley only 90 percent of planets have nothing on them,they want us to explore and then limit that exploration, explains why there's no vehicles ,stop and start gameplay in a game like this, is disappointing,hopefully it isn't like people are making out ,but if it is,expect it to get marked down in review scores.

@ZuneTattooGuy same, i have fiber 1000mbps. I downloaded Diablo 4 in 11 mins or so. It was 76GB. I am just happy they have fiber in my area. Not all places have it yet. But more and more areas are getting it. It’s a game changer.

I just got the feeling there will be another patch on Thursday haha.

Related to the fully explorable planets.

Personally i prefer the chunks. Think about it this way. Star Trek, Star Wars and possibly others you get to a planet find where you need to go and then land do your thing and then move on. Want to explore another area of the planet…go into space pick another and explore. I mean do you really want to spend days, if not more, exploring just 1 planet? I don’t.

Also… Thursday seems like will never arrive 😵‍💫

@Kaloudz theyve released the game for review, so it should be reviewed as such, patch or not,you could say that about most games these days,starfield should not get a pass ,I see starfield as make or break for xbox,If its not astounding, expect backlash,listen,can you hear playstation players sniggering.

@Aniscape no,no,no ,think of it this way ,imagine playing skyrim,then you left whiterun to go exploring and it said boundary reached so you had to access the map and go to another area of the map ,to access riften....total immersion breakage,even barren planets have that sense of wonder, you see a mountain in the distance and get that boundary reached message,no thanks.

@tallythwack From experience, when a reviewer gets a code for a game, they also get a fact sheet that explains (most of the time) what the day one patch will and won't fix. They also get a heads up as to when the patch will arrive.

Now, if a patch won't arrive until after the public get their hands on it, then I agree, faster pussycat, kill, kill. If, on the other hand, it's the invert, and a patch will fix issues prior to public release, then no, the game should get a pass. Same with any other game.

State of Decay 2 was littered with reviews that highlighted problems that the public never witnessed. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a smooth launch, but it wasn't nearly as bad as it was made out to be by some reviews. Despite that UL released comprehensive fact sheets explaining that the issues would be fixed before release. That's poor form. What would be the point in reading a review that highlights faults that are fixed before public consumption? That helps no one.

However, here is how i look at it. Skyrim has 1 big map with points of interest like Whiterun and Riften and along the way you discover a cave or amazing mountain view or someone on the road that wants your sweetroll.

In Starfield the galaxy is the skyrim map and as you travel from solar system A to solar system B you find a derelict ship or a moon with a distress signal or someone on another ship wants to steal your sandwiches. You still get that experience it is galaxy wide instead of 1 land map. Do you really just want to keep going on the same planet and go oh look there is a mountain, and look a river, and an ocean and another mountain but there aren’t any living settlements or peoples trying to steal your sandwiches?

I think we need to think of this in a much wider field of view. No?

@Aniscape THAT, is the only reason I don't envy reviewers of this game 😅 it's that vast, that sprawling, that diverse, and that in depth, that it's one of those few games that will be hard to articulate comprehensively.

That's fine by me, because I like to go in as blind as can be, but man, for the info chompers out there, it's going to be a mammoth task.

@tallythwack Funny you mention Skyrim because I have seen a few folks say that each tile is about the size of the Skyrim map. With a world being made up of several dozen such tiles. Of course I haven't played it & I have no idea if that is true or not.

If it is true just one tile will be a huge area to explore without hitting the "border" transition.

My reaction to the border thing is it's just a storm in a teacup. Mostly just folks using it as an excuse to crap on Starfield for reasons I don't understand.

@Aniscape fair points ,but in my view planetary exploration is compromised doin it this way ,i found the way that they explained the planets like procedural mixed with hand crafted settlements etc was very interesting and not been done before ,they've took away that feeling of wandering for hours and then making your way back,then you see your ship in the distance and its your final trek home,the barrier sounds like a loading screen to me and they couldn't actually implement full sized planets ,no mans sky and elite have done it for years ,its 2023 ,bethesda shouldve been able to implement this,anyway we don't really know yet how it works ,so its all conjecture.

@BBB freedom for the player is taken away ,immersion is broken,if they would've said the planets are broken up into segments that would've been fine ,im sure they couldve come up with a gameplay element that would explain why you can't walk from point a to b to c to d,so your flying across a planet on your jetpack taking in the sights and then plonk,barrier reached ,thats not a good thing.

@tallythwack I assume you are speaking for yourself when you say immersion is broken etc etc because I will be a player too & personally don't see it that way.

We can discuss the if, buts & maybe or the merits of doing it one way or the other but at the end of the day it's not going to change anything about the game.

Regardless of what either of us think about specific choices Bethesda have made Starfield is going to sell bucket loads either way

This is what i love about these discussions. What is immersive for one may not be for another. For a developer to find the balance to ensure a great experience must be daunting to say the least especially for a game of this size and everyone’s personal expectations!

For me it is more immersive breaking to be able to just keep walking and explore an entire planet (granted until release we do not fully know and may just be player choice). Thinking about resources of food or spacesuit limitations even if there were vehicles the fuel and wear and tear on the vehicle and just landscape crossing issues. Again for me it makes more sense to explore an area go back to ship pick up more supplies, drop of resources collected. Then decide where to ho next.

If the planets are truly open i would still play this way as it makes sense to me for my personal immersion.

That being said it would be great to allow for both play styles but if not then it will be up to the individual to determine if this is a buy or a pass.

This is exactly how I feel as well. From a "realism" point of view, you'd never be able to explore a whole planet without needing to resupply.

Even Fallout 4, you couldn't expect to just walk across Boston in one continuous movement and that didn't have vehicles either.

I'm a big fan of open world games, but I can't say I don't get bored wandering between points of interest. Zelda TotK was massive and though there were things to do, a large majority of the time was just trudging along a field waiting for something to happen.

Smaller map chunks with areas to explore suits me perfectly. It allows me to dig in to the area and then if I have to switch off to go to work or something, I'm able to remember what I've done and where I've been as it seems to show 'Explored' on the landing points, which is nice.

@Aniscape I just wanted to explore untethered,if the planet is there procedurally generated like bethesda suggested ,why force players to basically fast travel to another part of the map ,the only reason I can see is that, they didn't have the technical know how to do that,for a massive company like bethesda with the money ms has brought to the game ,I dont get how that couldn't be achievable ,I just hope its not been all smoke and mirrors ,and the game isn't as deep as they have been making it out to be.

I hear the game is currently on v. 1.7.something, that shows how much polished it might be. Games usually release on v1.0, but Starfield had an extra year development time, and sounds like it payed off!

This reminds me of when Fable came out on og xbox. I was hyped for all the promises pre launch and it ended up being a fraction of the promises. Was I disappointed, yes. But when i took away all the pre launch shenanigans and just started playing the game i ended up loving it for what it was not what it was supposed to be.

So who knows how much is out there. But if what is in there is fun and gives me an experience of being in space…then maybe the other stuff can be added in a sequel…in the year 2040 😜

So looking forward to this game. I am sure that it will live up to the hype. My premium edition upgrade arrives on Friday. Can’t believe that is only two days away, now. Glad to have that day off work.
